Brenda's Banter
Late spring and early summer 2019 have been a bit unusual here at Brenda Stewart by Design. Robert is recovering from knee replacement surgery. No one could have ever really prepared either of us for the recuperation period from this surgery. But we are so thankful that he is improving every day. I have had some work in progress for a couple of months that has had to be shelved for a while as I have had on my caregivers hat! I have been out of the office and studio too much!
Below you will see some new surfaces that I have had made for new projects and for alternative surfaces for existing paintings. The lightweight frames will be perfect for many of my previously published patterns...especially since many older surfaces are no longer available. They may also spark your creativity for using patterns by other artists in a different manner.
Since we have had a great response to the heavier framed panels that we introduced for the Callas and Teapot and Afternoon Snack paintings, we have also had a new size made of that style frame. It was sized to fit Old Pewter and Fruit, for those who wish to have a more traditionally framed painting.
I have some new projects on the drawing board and am planning on releasing some I have been holding on to for a while. Watch the site for new things in the coming weeks/months.

He begins with a value study, then completed with color glazes, a wonderful opportunity to try something a bit different and learn some new techniques. Introducing new lightweight frames with removable panels. Brenda had these made for some new projects she has coming up...and found that they are nice surface alternatives for many of her existing patterns. Some of our original surfaces are no longer available, and these work great for some of those older patterns. We are showing a few ideas...but there are many more that would work with a little size adjustment. They are the same beautiful quality as all of our wood, and are nicely priced for classes. For those of you developing new projects for classes, we offer teacher discounts on our wood pieces.

Colored Pencil Seminar with Marian Jackson, MDA

Join us for our fifth annual Color Pencil Seminar with Marian Jackson, MDA. This is a 3 day seminar hosted by Brenda Stewart, CDA, in beautiful Williamsburg, Virginia. Marian will be teaching two projects. We will begin with Golden Glow and then move on to the second project, Peek a Boo Birdie.
Golden Glow features a new surface to challenge you (Sanded paper) and a different approach to techniques. In addition to the Prismacolor Pencils Marian normally uses, this painting will introduce a few pencils from the Derwent Colorsoft line.
Marian has been painting for 40 years and teaching for more than 30. She is a Master Decorative Painter with the Society of Decorative Painters. She also paints in oils, but for the last 15 years has specialized in Colored Pencils, which she has used for more than 30 years.

Seminar Information:
Orientation begins at 1 PM on Thursday afternoon. Following the short orientation, you will prepare your seminar surfaces.
Friday, Saturday, & Sunday are spent painting the seminar projects. There is a full day of painting on Sunday. The classroom is open at 8 AM and class begins at 9 AM.

Fall Colored Pencil Seminar with Amy Lindenberger, CPSA, CPX

We are excited to welcome a new teacher, Amy Lindenberger, to our 2020 Colored Pencil Seminar Program. Amy teaches workshops on a variety of subject matter and colored pencil techniques. She is a firm believer that colored pencil has brought her tremendous opportunity and artistic fulfillment.
Amy is a Summa Cum Laude graduate from the University of Akron, Oh with a bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Drawing. In 1990 she became a charter member of the Colored Pencil Society of America (CPSA) and in 2013 she was awarded Signature status by CPSA in colored pencil and mixed media works (CPX).
Amy's project photos will be released in November 2019. At that time, registration will open for her seminar.
New flight and ground transportation options
If possible, we suggest arriving the day prior to the first seminar day and scheduling departures for the day following the completion of the seminar. The last day of seminar includes a full day of instruction.
The best airports to fly into are Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport - Patrick Henry Field (PHF) or Richmond International Airport (RIC).
Because ground transportation costs from either the Williamsburg/Newport News and Richmond airports have escalated in recent years, we have been investigating lower cost options for our seminar students. Tutorial Correction
It has come to our attention that the Old Pewter and Fruit tutorial was published with the seminar instuctions and not the full tutorial instructions. The students in the seminar were to decide how to finish the frame. I have added Brenda's instructions for finishing the frame in the file below.
